Anna Catherin Loll researches former socialist secret services and algorithms’ shaping power on today’s society. With CIHR she focuses on two projects. The first looks into the role of secret services of former socialist countries on terrorism in the 1980s. With this project Anna particually (though not exclusively) focuses on analysing and reviewing the relationship between the former GDR secret service (“Stasi”) with Syrian based Palestinian organizations as well as their relationship with the West-German Red Army Faction in the 1980s.
Anna’s second project looks into algorithms and their shaping power in today’s society, specifically in the field of political advertising. Anna plans to combine the gained insight with an analysis of the effect of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on political advertisement by comparing GDPR’s implementation in different EU countries.
